Formal European

This garden can be found in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and was the previous estate of James Couzens, a banker and founding partner of the Ford Motor Company. Originally designed by Albert Kahn in 1925-1927, this estate, now known as the Wabeek Mansion, once encompassed more than 960 acres.

Commissioned by the owners of the Wabeek Mansion to create a master landscape plan for the mansion and the surrounding 2 acres of grounds. The mansion and grounds had fallen into disrepair from years of neglect. The new owners wanted to restore the home to its former glory and felt the gardens were just as deserving of a historically correct makeover. Beginning with the English Oak Alley Driveway leading to the Grand Fountain Garden, the garden echoes the experience of the grandest formal gardens of the world. The landscape master plan keys the garden rooms (sixteen in total) to the homes doors and windows, offering a living picture to those looking from the inside out. These garden rooms include a Shakespeare Garden, Formal Rose Garden, Fountain Garden, and a breathtaking Formal Reflecting Pool Garden.
